The Baba Yaga may be sticking around for years to come. That was the consensus, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, between John Wick star Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski. The latter is about to put the finishing touches on the third installment of the action franchise and tells EW he and Reeves “have plenty of ideas for more movies” about the dog-loving assassin. Normally it would be common for a director to be tight-lipped over the future of the franchise; look no further than James Wan, who has been saying throughout the Aquaman press tour how unsure he is whether he will continue with the franchise. It’s refreshing, then, to hear how excited Stahelski is for the future of John Wick. It’s not like he doesn’t have reason to be: with the first sequel doing better than the original, the third film coming out in a few months, and TV companion The Continental on the way courtesy of the Starz network, there’s a lot to look forward to with the franchise.

John Wick

When the third John Wick film was first being developed, it was unknown whether Stahelski would stay on, given his commitment to the long in development Highlander reboot. The goal was to get John Wick: Parabellum ready for production, and then depending on his schedule, bring in somebody else to direct the next movie. I was glad that he stayed on in the end because I really like the collaboration between Reeves and the filmmakers, who had initially collaborated in a different capacity on the Matrix films. That being said, I can’t help but be disappointed his proposed Highlander reboot has yet to come to fruition. Stahelski has more than proven his mettle with The Matrix and John Wick; he deserves to have a chance to build something on his own from the ground up, despite the narrative in question being based on an established IP like Highlander.
